Adjust Your Focus
Philippians 4:8 is one of my favorite verses:
8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
This verse reminds us to acknowledge the truth. Even when current situations are difficult, we are to remain hopeful for our good future. Staying positive helps us focus on things that can uplift the spirit and keep us moving forward.
Scripture also tells us to “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things” (Colossians 3:2), which requires us to look beyond what can be seen with the natural eye. In this life, people may often compare us with others which can push us into the comparison trap. We then begin feeling inadequate. This inevitably leads to more self-doubt, and soon ones brain is filled with negative self-talk. If you catch yourself doing this, recognize it, shift your thinking, and quickly adjust your focus. In other words, it’s time to reframe. Is it really important what others can do and what they can attain, if you are you doing the best with what you have? Our Lord is rich in diversity and spiritual gifts and has given them according to his desire. If you are indeed using what you have been given to the best of your ability, then, you are doing exactly what you are supposed to be doing. Stop the self-sabotage and negative self-talk and get to work. Complaining is simply a nonproductive use of your time. Remember, our God has provided us with gifts that not only benefit us but will benefit others. Do the very best with what you have and let that be your legacy. Remember, whatever you are going through, try focusing on the eternal things and allow your mind to be drawn towards hope, joy, and peace in Jesus Christ rather than the difficulty of your present situation. Then, commit to being the best YOU that YOU can be for His Glory!
