Listening in a Time of Crisis
We all know that a leader's success depends on their knowledge and ability to influence others. Equally, leaders are considered an authority figure and are looked to as a source of accurate information and inspiration. Those who follow, particularly in a time of uncertainty, need to hear their leader's voice for guidance. The expectation is that the leader will have a proven track record of integrity and their voice will be reassuring. I In times of crisis or unrest, good leaders will consider many factors before speaking. Great care will be given to the choice of words, the delivery, the location of the speech, and the list goes on. They recognize that all of these variables potentially will impact the outcome of the listener. Therefore, careful consideration of these things as well as the audience's perspectives is taken into account. They determine if the message is received and as intended. Good messages are clear and to the point. A vague message may appear misleading while an overly emotional message can prematurely set off alarms causing others to panic. The dissemination of important news in a calm, factual way conveys its seriousness without evoking undue fear. How are you staying in constant contact with those you lead? What are you doing to help them gain confidence and reassurance?
